We were talking about confidence in product decisions and lack of critical roles at an early stage. I said that if I ran a startup, I would hire UX researchers early on, to which he responded \u201Cstartups don\u2019t know how to use UX researchers.\u201D I don\u2019t disagree with that. Purely anecdotal, but I don\u2019t think I know any pre-series D startups that have hired researchers. Usually, startups will just implement an idea and throw it at a wall to see what sticks. I\u2019m actually wondering if this is influenced by availability heuristics (I have more engineers in my network; the media tends to overly highlight a leader\u2019s STEM background). But this is besides the point. I\u2019m realizing now that there\u2019s a fallacy in the predisposition that utilizing UX research is the most optimal use of time\/resources for all startups. A startup\u2019s biggest competitive advantage is how quickly they can build and ship. When they launch a feature, they launch to thousands or hundreds of thousands; they don\u2019t launch to hundreds of millions of customers where there\u2019s a significant monetary impact from moving UI just a few pixels or changing a few shades. Having the freedom to \u201Cthrow ideas at a wall\u201D, to experiment without catastrophic consequences, is a really desirable method to gain confidence in the thing to build. Development at enterprises tends to be slower because of the rigor involved when building at scale. So we rely on other more cost-effective methods to reduce risk and build confidence - like various forms of UX research. That said, there are certainly stages of a product lifecycle, even for startups, where it\u2019s better to rely on UX research. I've found that innovation at an enterprise level can generally be classified as one of three categories:  \r\n      \r\n    1\\. Continuous Innovation. Incremental features within the existing business verticals. This is your atomic unit of innovation and tends to be the most common form across all business types and sizes.  \r\n    2\\. Discontinuous Innovation. Most people think of this as disruptive ideas or new-to-world products. Through an enterprise scope, I see it simply as a new business vertical (new-to-us, not necessarily new-to-world).  \r\n    3\\. Big Vision. Long-term product strategy for the existing business which takes about 3-5 years to achieve. This also requires 1-2 year continuous innovation strategy and support from various teams within an org\/company.  \r\n      \r\n    Having spent the last ~10 years in the innovation space in various capacities at Amazon, here are my thoughts for success.  \r\n      \r\n    1\\. But when our team was forced to work from home and we learned to be more effective, it was a huge awakening for me. The current debate is around telecommute vs in-person, communication guidelines, salary impact, competitive advantage with hiring, etc. This is narrow thinking, built upon the rigidity in the workplace (traditions or process for process's sake, makes me think of business attire vs sweats and hoodie). Mandatory work-from-home was the first step for me to embrace the conditions required to do my best work. It closes the equity gap; some people perform better in an office environment, but not everyone does. Beyond location, it's about embracing everyone's uniqueness in how they focus, channel their creativity, and produce their best work. It's not just where you're working but the environment itself, the time of day, the duration; it's about properly allocating time for your kids and minimizing stress\/distractions when they get sick or something happens at daycare. It's about creating the optimal experience for each individual to do their best work. If you're a manager\/leader who can't recognize that or is unwilling because some pre-established, potentially outdated norm that has little benefits, that's the real reason you're losing your hiring competitive advantage.
